Common questions

Which languages does Voice Notes understand?

Voice Notes transcribes these 25 languages. It recognizes the language on its own, so there is nothing to set. You can’t choose a language by hand, and a note in more than one language may mix them up.

  • БългарскиBulgarian
  • HrvatskiCroatian
  • ČeštinaCzech
  • DanskDanish
  • NederlandsDutch
  • English
  • EestiEstonian
  • SuomiFinnish
  • FrançaisFrench
  • DeutschGerman
  • ΕλληνικάGreek
  • MagyarHungarian
  • ItalianoItalian
  • LatviešuLatvian
  • LietuviųLithuanian
  • MaltiMaltese
  • PolskiPolish
  • PortuguêsPortuguese
  • RomânăRomanian
  • РусскийRussian
  • SlovenčinaSlovak
  • SlovenščinaSlovenian
  • EspañolSpanish
  • SvenskaSwedish
  • УкраїнськаUkrainian

Other languages, such as Hindi, Arabic, Chinese or Japanese, aren’t supported yet and will transcribe poorly. You can still record and play them back.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Recording, transcription and search all work without a connection. The app needs the internet once, to download its speech model from Google Play or the App Store. It shows the size before you download, and you can wait for Wi‑Fi.

Pro features, such as summaries, chat and backup, need a connection. If you are offline, they catch up when you are back online.

Is anything uploaded on the free version?

No. Without Pro, your recordings and transcripts never leave your phone. The free app has no account, no ads and no analytics, and it does not connect to our servers. Our privacy policy has the details.

How do I move my notes to a new phone?

On the free version, your notes live only on your phone, so save a copy before you switch. In Voice Notes, open Settings, then Data, then Export all notes. You get one zip file with every recording as M4A audio and every transcript as text. Save it somewhere you can reach from the new phone, such as your computer or a cloud drive.

Android’s automatic backup and phone transfer do not include your recordings, so the export is the way to keep them. On iPhone, an iCloud backup or a backup to your computer restored onto the new iPhone also brings your notes.

With Pro, sign in on the new phone with the same Google or Apple account. Your notes appear straight away, and audio downloads when you open a note.

What does Pro add, and what does it cost?

Pro adds summaries of each note with reminders you can add to your calendar, chat with your notes, smart search by meaning, cloud backup and sync across phones, and photos and videos in your notes.

In the United States, Pro costs $5.99 a month or $39.99 a year, and the yearly plan starts with a 7 day free trial. Prices in other countries are set in local currency. The app and the store show your price before you subscribe.

How do I cancel Pro?

Subscriptions are managed by the store you bought from. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel them.

  • Android: open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Choose Voice Notes and tap Cancel subscription.
  • iPhone: open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Choose Voice Notes and tap Cancel Subscription.

Pro keeps working until the end of the period you paid for. To avoid being charged when a free trial ends, cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.

How do I get Pro back on a new phone?

Install Voice Notes, open Settings, then Pro, and tap Restore purchases. Sign in with the same Google or Apple account you used before, and Pro and your notes come back.

What happens to my notes if Pro ends?

Notes on your phone are never touched, and attachments stay viewable. If a payment fails, the store gives a grace period and Pro keeps working.

After Pro ends, your cloud copy stays available, read only, for 90 days. You can download, export and delete it, but nothing new is uploaded or summarized. The app reminds you 30 days and 7 days before the end. After 90 days, the cloud copy is deleted. Subscribe again within those 90 days and everything picks up where it left off.

How do I delete my account?

In Voice Notes, open Settings, then Account, then Delete account. You can also delete your account on the web, or email us from the address on your account.

This deletes your account and everything stored in the cloud within 24 hours. Notes on your phone stay until you delete them or the app. Deleting your account does not cancel your subscription, so cancel it in the store first.

How do I delete notes?

Open a note, tap the menu, then Delete. It moves to Recently deleted for 30 days, where you can restore it or delete it for good, from Settings, then Data, then Recently deleted. With Pro, deleting a note also removes it from the cloud and your other phones.

My phone stopped a long recording. What can I do?

Voice Notes saves audio every couple of seconds, so a recording that stops early keeps everything up to that point, and the app finishes it the next time it opens. Some phones, including some from OnePlus, Xiaomi and Samsung, close apps in the background to save battery. If that happens, the app shows the steps for your phone to let Voice Notes keep recording.

A note can run up to 4 hours. After that, recording carries on in a new note, so nothing is cut off.

Is there an iPhone version?

Voice Notes is on Android first, and the iPhone version is coming soon. When it arrives, you can sign in there with the same account and your Pro notes sync across both.
